Customer Spotlight:
Heartland Catfish
Greensboro, AL

Heartland Catfish Company, a leading producer of US farmed raised catfish, has raised the bar even further on its commitment to supply the highest quality products at a competitive price.

In early 2010, Heartland installed a centralized WhiteWater Ozone System in their Greensboro processing facility. Ozonated water is delivered to all areas of the plant through a circulating loop system. This on-demand design ensures consistent ozone levels are available at every application point, during production and for nightly sanitation.

The system performs many different functions throughout the day. While processing, food safe ozonated water is applied to automated processing machinery, conveyors, and directly to the product from start to finish.

These intervention steps help to control and discourage bacteria growth throughout the production shift. This significantly reduces the buildup and cross contamination normally experienced with traditional processing.

When processing is finished, the same ozone system (combined with a cold water high pressure spray) is used to clean up the plant. Multiple step conventional chemical processes and high volume hot water use are a thing of the past, replaced with a "green" environmentally responsible sanitation program.

Tim Millwood - Heartland VP of Operations

"We initially purchased a system to verify the efficacy of ozone for our specific operation. Many of our customers were using the technology to improve product quality/shelf life and recommended we look into it. The benefits we realized made the decision to implement this on a large scale very easy. Our WhiteWater System not only keeps our plant cleaner during and after production, it allows us to do it in a safe, environmentally friendly way."

How To: Getting started with ozone
Steps for Success

This months how to guide focuses on the question...how do I investigate ozone's fit for my operation?

Thorough research and planning is the best recipe for success with ozone. Many past failures can be directly attributed to someone (a user or a vendor) not understanding how to properly use ozone. It must be done in a way that's safe, effective, and reliable

Ozone International's food industry experts are available to assist you through this process. Basic questions are always welcome, or we can help you move forward with full design and implementation plans. This is what separates Ozone International from the competition.

Below, we provide some general guidelines to help you get started:

1) Research the O3 molecule.
  • Learn what it can and cannot do.
  • Investigate government approvals.
2) Choose an ozone vendor who is:
  • Knowledgeable of your industry and ozone technology.
  • Successful within your industry and can provide current references.
  • Capable of designing a system to fit your unique operation, one size does not fit all.
  • Capable of providing a realistic, yet compelling ROI.
  • Able to offer on site implementation and training.
  • Committed to your success.
3) Request a site evaluation.
  • Phone review.
  • Site visit (if required).
  • Establish current and future needs for ozone.
4) Design applications & ozone system.
  • It's equally important to have safe/effective applications as well as the proper equipment.
  • Utilize your vendor's expertise to implement proven applications.
  • Choose the right size ozone unit with the right capabilities.
5) Startup/Training
  • Select internal ozone champions. Success starts with strong management.
  • Implement & train. Essential for a trouble free startup.
  • Educate your sales team. Market your benefits to your customers.
6) After sale service & tech support.
  • Who do you call for help?
  • Does your vendor provide 24 hour service and support?
  • Does your vendor offer service plans?
