Unisea expands
ozone based "green" cleaning/sanitizing technology for 2010
season...
Dutch Harbor,
AK
Unisea Inc. is proud to announce
the expansion of Ozone International's
Whitewater technology to include all processing areas
of their Dutch Harbor operation. This full
plant implementation, ADEC sanctioned, will be operational for
the upcoming 2010 season.
Unisea's Dutch Harbor production facility is one
of the largest and most automated seafood plants in the
world. As an industry leader, priority is given to producing
the highest quality product while utilizing environmentally
responsible sanitation practices. Ozone has been a crucial tool in
furthering that commitment.
Initially implemented in the spring of 2006 on the
primary pollock lines, ozone was applied directly to the
product transfer surfaces to help control bacteria growth on
conveyor belts and processing equipment.
Short intervention cleaning sessions using food safe
WhiteWater technology were also performed while production
workers were on breaks.
The positive effects of the WhiteWater System
were immediate and exceeded initial expectations. Micro
counts were dramatically reduced and maintained throughout
production via a continuous cleaning approach. Transfer
surfaces and processing areas exhibited just cleaned
characteristics throughout periods of nonstop production eliminating
microbial spoilage and improving product quality.
As a testament to the achieved results, this
technology is now being expanded to the Surimi, Crab,
Roe and Cod production areas of the Dutch Harbor facility. This
progressive approach with proven technology helps to further enhance
Unisea’s reputation as a leader in bringing positive change to the
Alaska Seafood Industry.
Pete Maloney, Vice President of Alaska Production,
had this to say about the system:
“Using ozone on our processing lines has
allowed us to reduce chemical usage without sacrificing
our quality standards. The continuous cleaning and sanitizing
technology has helped us to implement a much more effective
microbiological control program. It has been a very effective tool in preventing bio-films
from developing on our conveyors and equipment. We are excited that we are now able to expand this to all
of our processing areas.” To learn
